TOMATOES
If you love tomatoes but have never tried a home grown one then you are in for a treat. Most of the shop bought commercial tomatoes and seeds are breed for durability and not flavour. They are picked green and ripened artifically. Most Heirloom seed varieties are over 100 years old. They are becoming more readily available. For the last 5 years we have grown only heirloom tomatoes and wont eat shop bought.I must admit I was very hesitant at first to try these as they werent the perfect round tomato I had grown up with.. After one season I was hooked and you will be too. Give it a try

DETERMINATE OR INDETERMINATE
Determinate tomatoes are varieties that grow to a fixed mature size and ripen all their fruit in a short period, usually about 2 weeks. Once this first flush of fruit has ripened, the plant will begin to diminish in vigor and will set little to no new fruit.

Indeterminate tomatoes are actually vines that continue growing in length throughout the growing season. Also referred to as "vining" tomatoes, indeterminate tomato varieties will also continue to set and ripen fruit until killed off by frost.

TOMATILLO Purple

Its not a tomato but makes the most amazing Salsa easy to grow

Tomatillos bear prolifically and are known for being tolerant of extreme conditions from dry farming to even cool nights. Tomatillos grow encased in a papery shell very similar looking to a Chinese Lantern (flower). The papery shell turns from green to brown and splits when they are ready. At this point they may feel sticky but are ready in the green stage for salsa.

Tomatillo Salsa

2 dozen tomatillos, husked and rinsed (less ripe are tangier, more ripe, sweeter)

1 small onion, diced or I have used shallots–delicious!

1 clove garlic, rough chopped

1 jalapeno, seeded & rough chopped

dash cumin

dash salt

Simmer the tomatillos for up to 5 minutes or until their colors ‘browns’ a bit. Err on the side of underdone, as overcooking will turn them to mush. Toss all other ingredients in a blender and add tomatillos last–their juice is what will bring it all together. Pulse briefly to incorporate. be careful when removing the lid as the hot ingredients will steam out. That’s it! So good and tangy! This salsa freezes well or can keep in the fridge up to about a week or so. Enjoy!

NEW

Sweet Raisin

These are the sweetest tomatoes ever Deliciousimo

The gourmet quality snack tomato, referred to as the “raisin tomato,” is grown for its high sugar content. The fruit’s sweetness intensifies when dried. The tomato was bred to dry naturally in clusters cut off the vine. To accelerate the drying tomatoes may be placed in a 100º F oven for about 3 hours. The sweet dry delicacy is snacked on like other dried fruit. The fresh fruits are ingredients in salads, omelets, pasta, kabobs, tarts and appetizers.

HEIRLOOM Black Krim Tomato 10 SEEDS
Origin: Russia
This rare variety was one of our top sellers earlier this year and is known in Russian as "Czerno Krimski" (Black Krim). Contrary to popular misconception on the part of most Tomato growers who believe that this variety is named after the Russian Crimea (Livadia), this variety hails from the Isle of Krim in the Black Sea off the coast of the Crimean peninsula. I have tried numerous strains of domestic Black Krims before finally settling on a strain that we imported from Western Russia, which is an outstanding strain.

Black Tomatoes have been super hot this year and this one is my best! This variety is a medium-large sized maroon beefsteak with green shoulders and an intense, unique taste! Ideal for slicing, salads and more. Due to their natural salty taste, sliced Black Krims do not require salting and only a hint of pepper, which makes them ideal if you can not have salt in your diet. The production of this variety is intense and it will do quite well in containers, but if not watered evenly during the summer, this variety is subject to splitting. About 75-80 days to maturity.

Nyagous produces wonderful globe shaped tomatoes in small clusters of 3 to 6 tomatoes each. The tomatoes produced by Nyagous have a very smooth, round shape which makes this an ideal tomato for market growers. Unlike many other black tomatoes, Nyagous Black is much less prone to cracking or cat-facing. The tomatoes are typically a dusky-red color (but lighter and darker variations do exist, ranging from typical red to a near black with an emerald green interior) with meaty flesh and possess a sweet, aromatic taste. 10 SEEDS

HEIRLOOM MORTGAGE LIFTER
Mortgage Lifter heirloom tomato was developed in the early 1930's by a man named M.C. “Radiator Charlie” Byles. Byles was a radiator repairman who, like many of his countrymen, struggled to keep his finances in order during the Great Depression. As the story goes, Radiator Charlie cross-bred the largest tomatoes he could find in his hometown of Logan, West Virginia, and sold the resulting plants for a dollar each. The profits he earned were substantial enough that he was able to pay down his mortgage with them!

Mortgage Lifter is an indeterminate tomato variety, which means that the plants will grow vines and continue to grow taller as the gardening season progresses. Without pruning, the plant will continue to grow longer. To allow the plant to focus on growing higher yields of fruit, pinch the suckers on the tomato vine, and stake the plant well.
